Wikia Search gets luke warm reception
Posted: January, 08 2008
Wikia Search, a potential rival to Google was launched yesterday but has already taken fire from Bloggers. Spawned from the co-founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales aim was to provide a search engine which internal workings were totally transparent to users and developers a like.
However, influential blogger Michael Arrington panned the Wikia Search launch - describing it as
one of the biggest disappointments I’ve had the displeasure of reviewing
A bit strong perhaps
He went on to explain on his blog TechCrunch:
The search results are poor and thin, as would be expected if not for the huge expectations that have been set. Absolutely no one is going to use this to search the web, until (and if) it is greatly improved.
Responding in the TechCrunch comments section, Mr Wales defended his site, saying:
It’s a project to build a search engine, not a search engine. We’ve been telling everyone that constantly.
Perhaps it’s a little early to start ripping the engine apart just yet, after all it does have the potential to do very well, if previous developments from Mr.Wales are anything to go by. Visit Wikia Search to make your own mind up.
