Nintendo’s ground breaking Wii console has been crowned gadget of the year. The best-selling games machine walked away with the coveted top prize last night at technology website Pocket-lint.co.uk’s annual Gadget Awards, beating off competition from Apple’s much-hyped iPhone and Nokia’s N95 mobile.

It also picked up the award for best console ahead of Sony’s Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

The Wii is set to be one of the most popular gifts this Christmas, with demand for the device in the UK currently out-stripping supplies in stores across the country.

It was a night of mixed fortunes for Apple. The company saw its iPod Touch lose out to the lesser known Archos 605 Wi-Fi in the best mp3 player category, but were awarded Best Smartphone for the iPhone.

The Awards, which are now in their fourth year, are judged by a panel of top tech journalists including Mirror.co.uk’s Kevin Lynch.
