@john: Did you try the latest update to 3.1?

Not to be confused with the 3.0.1...

I'm done with Sony, I bought my ps3 at full price and now they the price and offer us original purchasers nothing. The PS3 is now useless. Sod Sony and all others who treat their customers this way.

Parameters for my 60GB launch unit to keep running for 30-90 minutes depending on the game and host negotiations: system pre-chilled to below 50 degrees unplugged, cover off, bluray drive elevated, 2 external fans, temperature in the room has to remain below 55 degrees. It will become impossible to run in summertime.

We have a PS3 80GB. We just had the YLOD repaired, got our system back, did the UPDATE and now our blu-ray player won't read games or movies of any kind. :( I REFUSE to give them another dime but something needs to be done about this. They clearly are at fault for this.

I have ps3 60gb was working fine till i updated ,now after playing blu-ray film it freezes ,reinserted a known blu-ray film which worked before, came up on screen invalid disc 80029906,phoned sony denied there was a problem, just said i was unlucky,i have 3 choices, pay to get it fixed £130 by sony,or exchange my old 60gb ps3 for slimline version in game store, and lose backwards compatibility,or repair it myself £89,new blu-ray drive, with the chance of it happening again.
Seems so unfair that this update has ruined my ps3,and i have to pay.
