SONY damages BluRay Drive via latest update

Playstation PS3 Bluray drive problems have arisen from SONY’s latest Firmware (FW) updates, namely 3.0 and 3.0.1 - the updates were not tested on the older PS3 machines and have pushed the laser beyond its original specification, rendering the PS3 Bluray drive permanently unusable for games and movies.
The firmware update that was intended to decrease Blu-ray Disc read times by speeding up the motor and spindle, is causing an increased power draw.

The latest update seems fine for the newer systems made with 60nm [nanometer] and 45nm chipsets that use less power and therefore create less heat.

But for the older, original 90nm chips, that already ran towards the hot side to begin with, it’s fatal. Too much power draw creates too much heat and leads to overheating and failure. It’s blatantly obvious to anyone who has worked with computers and laptops.

It seems that more and more people are experiencing the same Blu Ray drive errors after this update but SONY are denying it is a problem. Even if SONY admitted to it, there would be no way of restoring functionality to the Blu Ray drives as they are now permanently damaged by the updates.

Error Codes include: 80029906, 80029941

OUR ADVICE IS CLEAR; If you are one of the lucky ones who hasn’t upgraded from FW 2.8 to 3.0 or 3.0.1, then DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE on older (Piano Black finish) machines.

Parameters for my 60GB launch unit to keep running for 30-90 minutes depending on the game and host negotiations: system pre-chilled to below 50 degrees unplugged, cover off, bluray drive elevated, 2 external fans, temperature in the room has to remain below 55 degrees. It will become impossible to run in summertime.

when I upgraded to 3.15, I lost 4 tv shows from my hard drive ( that I bought from their store). I had 3.10 and they made 3.15 a MUST. I had no problem upgrading the firmware, but after it was done I notified some my shows was gone, flat out GONE. so I e-mail sony, they denied it was possible!!! so I sent a couple more to at least find out why they disappeared, but sony’s story was the same everytime. then my games starting disappearing too. I got pissed off, so I send a few more to see what was going on. it’s no surprise that they denied it but then they banned me from their network. To me, I wasted over 800 dollars on a flawed system!!! because of their denials, I decided that sony was not worthwhile anymore. I’m left with 5 games out of 32 with no way of downloading them again!!! If this is how sony treats it’s clients, IN MY WORDS, A BIG FUCKING SCAM!!! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!!

We have a PS3 80GB. We just had the YLOD repaired, got our system back, did the UPDATE and now our blu-ray player won’t read games or movies of any kind. :( I REFUSE to give them another dime but something needs to be done about this. They clearly are at fault for this.

I have ps3 60gb was working fine till i updated ,now after playing blu-ray film it freezes ,reinserted a known blu-ray film which worked before, came up on screen invalid disc 80029906,phoned sony denied there was a problem, just said i was unlucky,i have 3 choices, pay to get it fixed £130 by sony,or exchange my old 60gb ps3 for slimline version in game store, and lose backwards compatibility,or repair it myself £89,new blu-ray drive, with the chance of it happening again.
Seems so unfair that this update has ruined my ps3,and i have to pay.

Another PS3 bites the dust. 80029906 code popped up and nada. Frozen pizza. Sounds like I’m screwed with everyone else. Why is there nothing that can be done if Sony is clearly responsible? Call the Better Business Bureau maybe?
